I was sentenced to 40 to Life, to date I have served 32 years. During my incarceration I worked at the laundry for 20 years & the Mess Hall for 10. I worked my way up to become the baker. This is a job I take great pride in. As many women do not have access to baked goods I pour my heart & soul into my baking for the women. My jobs have kept me grounded and gave me purpose. It is the way I support my community. They may not be fancy jobs but they are necessary.
I have lived in Fiske an honor house that is unique as it is a self governing unit that currently houses just 21 women. I am responsible to help maintain the house & I hope being a good neighbor.
I am 60 years old. This summer I contracted COVID while working in the mess hall. I was fortunate to have mild symptoms.
My family has always been my biggest supporters. That support will undoubtedly continue when I leave. I have 3 wonderful brothers & 1 amazing sister-in-law. While incarcerated I became the Grandmother to 3 granddaughter's. They are the joy of my life. I am so proud of their Fathers my sons have been through so much but they continually amaze me.
It is hard to imagine my life outside these walls. Making housing plans or job plans is not something I have done as I still have 8 years to my first board. But I would apply for housing with Hour Children, I have a long standing relationship with them. I would also consider the STEP Program as they house & provide support also.
