Robert Ehrenberg

*Robert was granted clemency in August 2021

At age 33, Robert Ehrenberg shot and killed a local jeweler during the course of a robbery. Now age 61, Robert has spent the past 28 years transforming himself from a young adult with addiction, anger, and impulse issues into a respected elder. Robert has used his time incarcerated to truly look inside himself and understand why he committed acts of violence. Robert has taken concrete steps to transform himself, including pursuit of higher education, participating in programs that address alternatives to violence, addiction, and aggression, and devotes much of his time to fundraising and advocacy efforts. Robert has received no disciplinary infractions for over eight years, which reflects his commitment to nonviolence and internal stability. In over 28 years of incarceration, he has received only nine infractions, and only three of those involved allegations of fighting or aggression. His last violent infraction was over 17 years ago, in 2003. Robert inspires those around him to achieve their full potential through both mentoring and academic tutoring. Robert is also HIV+. His health conditions render him especially susceptible to serious illness or death if infected with COVID-19, which is a serious problem in several DOCCS facilities. Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, Robert’s age and health make clemency a matter of life and death. He is scheduled to appear before the parole board in 2042, at the age of 83.
