Robert Green

UPDATE from Robert’s wife Bonnie: My dear husband of almost 16 years of marriage went home to be with his precious Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ at 9:25 pm on September 17, 2022, after a year and a half battle with lung cancer. Robert had many wonderful friends on the inside and shared in the glory of those friends of his who were able to come home from prison and have a wonderful, meaning-filled life on the outside. Several of those who have come home were able to come to his funeral today to honor my husband and their friendship with their participation. Stories told today of some of their shared experiences in their time together on the inside were wonderful to hear!

Robert’s Original Clemency Profile Written by Robert’s wife Bonnie

My husband was arrested in 1978 at the age of 23. He spent 2 plus years on Riker's Island awaiting trial. He was convicted for a crime he did not commit and sentenced to 51 years to life. We were introduced by a mutual friend and wrote to each other for a year and a half before we spoke on the phone for the first time. About a month after we spoke, I went to visit him in August of 2006. During my second visit, a week later, he asked me to marry him, and I said yes. We were married in Nov of 2006. Rob submitted clemency requests for the two governors before Cuomo took office, and both of those requests were denied. We submitted another request for clemency with Cuomo in 2012 and have yet to receive a decision on that request. Since that request was originally submitted in 2012, my husband has been diagnosed with 5 different chronic diseases that have no cure and put him in a high-risk category of getting Covid-19 (which he did get in January of 2021), should he be exposed to it. My husband has had very few disciplinarian tickets in his almost 43 years of incarceration. My husband achieved a certificate from the US Department of Labor to test other inmates to find out their skills as an electrician, plumber, mechanic, etc. so that they should be placed in a facility that could use their given expertise. My husband was a teaching assistant in the hobby shop, teaching ceramics to other inmates for several years. He has taken several college courses, but was transferred to another facility that did not offer college classes so he was not able to complete his degree. He has taken several other training programs. He will be eligible for parole in 2029, when he will be 75 years old. He is a born-again Christian who has served in the church for several years when at Sullivan CF facilitating bible studies, assisting with the choir as a sound technician and attending many services throughout the week. He has a very good disciplinary record throughout his time served to date at several facilities throughout the state. He is 66 years old and is suffering from several different health issues. The latest is he is currently undergoing treatments (both radiation and chemotherapy) for Stage 3 Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer in his left lung. They treated him for pneumonia in his left lung about 3 months ago. He also suffers from a hiatal hernia, which is causing him to have severe acid reflux. But until he completes his treatments for the lung cancer, they cannot do the surgery to repair the hernia. He is also a diabetic; receiving both insulin as well as oral medications to control his sugar. Because of the lung cancer, he has lost 45 pounds over the last 6 - 8 months. He also has a terrible cough due to the lung cancer as well. Although the acid reflux can also be contributing to the cough he has. He has had high blood pressure in the past, but because of the weight loss, they have been able to take him off of the medication treating the high blood pressure. But if he recovers from the lung cancer, and gains back some of the weight, they made need to put him back on the blood pressure medicine. He has not been sleeping well for the last 8 months since he developed this cough as it keeps him up at night. Sometimes the coughing gets so bad, it makes him retch. So far, he has not spit up any blood and hopefully it won’t get to that point. We have been happily married for 14 years and we both pray that God will grant us many more! Rob has a very stable home environment ready and waiting for him should they release him.
