Rodney Chandler
At the tender age of 17 years old, Rodney Chandler shot and killed a 36 year-old-man, after a broken rule in a game of dice resulted in an altercation between the victim and Mr. Chandler’s friend. Now, at age 40, Mr. Chandler feels deep remorse and regret for the irreparable harm he caused the victim’s family and his community. Today, he dedicates his life to assisting the aging and terminally ill in the facility’s hospice program by providing them with nurture and basic care. He is a trusted and respected barber and has been granted access to carry out those duties in some of the most sensitive units at Wende Correctional Facility. Mr. Chandler continues to dedicate his life to giving back by also becoming a blind and visually impaired mobility aide, and more recently dedicated his time to learning sign language to communicate with those in prison who are deaf and mute. His hard work and self-development over the years earned him a change in classification – and subsequent transfer to a medium security prison. Mr. Chandler is a loving brother, father, and husband; he is scheduled to appear before a parole board in 2023.
