Ulysses Boyd
*Ulysses was granted clemency in August 2021
Mr. Ulysses Boyd, age 65, is serving 50 years to life for second-degree murder. He has now served more than 30 years of that prison sentence and will not be eligible for parole until 2036, when he will be 81-years old.
In 1986, at the age of 31, Ulysses Boyd and his co-defendants were involved in the killing of Harold Bates, following a drug sale related altercation in a Harlem basement. Although Ulysses did not pull the trigger and is the only of the co-defendants that remains incarcerated, he does not minimize his role in the crime. Ulysses has accepted full responsibility and continues to express his sincere and heartfelt remorse for his actions, which caused a young man to lose his life. Ulysses acknowledges that he is responsible for the lifetime of pain that he inflicted upon Mr. Bates' loved ones.
While incarcerated, Ulysses has committed himself to education, faith and service. He has spent his time "paying it forward." He has:
o Started the first Hepatitis C Support Group for incarcerated men in 1997;
o Counseled At-Risk Youth in the Juvenile Delinquency Intervention Program;
o Performed tasks as a Nurse's Aide, caring for chronically ill patients, assisting the deaf and blind, counseling patients suffering from depression and anxiety, and providing HIV/AIDS training;
o Worked to support other incarcerated people as a Law Library Clerk
The above are only a few examples of Ulysses’ journey to becoming the giving man he is today. He is a husband, father, grandfather, son, and respected elder who lives out his remorse by serving others.
