Walter Tyrone Smith
Written by Walter’s friend Darryl
Walter Tyrone Smith, is a 73-year-old man that contracted the COVID Virus in 2020 in prison. He is an elderly human being now that has spent 40 years in prison for crimes he committed. He has taken responsibility for his actions, and used his time in prison to become a better person while helping others. Over his time in prison, Walter has worked for the state Core Craft industries in various facilities, making license plates, building furniture for Courthouses, State and Local office building, soap and sanitizers for society. He has received accommodation letters over the years of service, and the last was from the governor due to helping fight the COVID virus. Walter has not been deemed a threat to the safety or operations of prisons. He has a good record of adjustment and compliance. He has completed all mandated programs for anger, aggression and criminal thinking by DOCCS.
Walter is an aged person in prison that is no longer a threat to society. His time in prison has caused him to think about his past life, decision and change his views. Walter is an unnecessary burden upon taxpayers. The debt he owes can now be better served by release and talking to youth and young adults in society making poor decisions. Walter has the loving support of family that has been committed to standby him and will upon release. He is father, grandfather and great grandfather. He is an uncle and elder relative that has directly helped the males in his family respond to life threatening challenges in better ways than he once did. In prison, he has counseled and mentored hundreds over the years on changing their thinking, behaviors and trajectory for the better. He has used fitness to educate the importance of healthy eating, diet; the abstaining of drugs (use and involvement), alcohol and therapy for anger toward controlling self. Walter, an aged person at 73 with 10 more years before release consideration, living with COVID 19 and other medical needs, during this COVID-19 pandemic, make clemency a matter of life and death. Being elderly, sick and aged in prison does not serve society interests. Walter is scheduled to appear before the parole board in 2031, at the age of 83. Please let him go.
